Hylas Collection / Berkeley East
2006 Hylas 54 For Sale
The Hylas 54 has long been regarded as one of the world’s best cruising yachts. Many of them have completed circumnavigations and almost all of them have carried their crews to distant shores. While the 54 has a well-earned reputation as a long distance liveaboard cruiser, she will also inspire sailors that want to enjoy a coastal daysail in a fresh breeze.Berkeley East is an originally-owned 2006 Hylas 54 that is undoubtedly the best 54 on the market today. She is certainly one of the cleanest, most well-cared for 54’s ever to be made available. The attention that Berkeley East’s sole owners have lavished upon her is truly apparent. Her new teak decks are in perfect condition, her newest set of sails shows minimal wear, and her interior is easily mistaken for that of a much younger vessel.

Berkeley East Highlights
Exterior Spaces
Teak decks are not only beautiful, but are the world’s best non-skid surface as well. While Hylas has installed a number of teak decks, the yard is much better known for its gelcoat non-skid decks and its strong, solid hulls. The new decks on Berkeley East are unique in that they are far thicker than the original decks and are glued down without the help of nails or screws. Truly, they are better than new. And her attractive and convenient sugar scoop transom enables boarding with safety and ease.
Hull & Deck
The fine entry of the 54, coupled with her more beamy yet well-proportioned aft sections, helps her not only perform beautifully going upwind, but also makes her very comfortable in larger seas. As with all of the 54’s, Berkeley East has a roomy center cockpit and wide side decks, a combination that makes moving forward and aft easy even in a seaway.
Sail Plan
Berkeley East boasts a cutter rig with an inmast furling mainsail. She has a well-balanced sail plan that has been proven in every condition. This along with electric primary winches adds to the ease of sail handling. The sails are all in excellent condition and poised for many more years of enjoyment when Berkeley East sets sail once again.
Interior Spaces
The center cockpit design lends itself to accommodations below that are perfectly ideal for both cruising couples and liveaboard families. The aft cabin is set apart from the remainder of the boat by the long passageway galley and the spacious salon. Forward, there are two roomy cabins and the extra head. Guests will enjoy having their own space while owners are sure to appreciate having the privacy they are accustomed to at home.
Galley
While a galley that has ample space for both cooking and storage is difficult to find on a sailboat of less than 60 feet, the Berkeley East is truly an exception. She has a lovely galley that not only checks these boxes but also offers easy and convenient access to the starboard side of the engine room through insulated inboard hatches. Additionally, having the space to cook and clean with a partner is a luxury that Hylas 54 owners have been known to relish.
Cabins
Berkeley East features a three cabin/two head layout. The third cabin is adjacent to the forward head and can be converted to a double berth or even alternately used as a work room. The forward cabin and aft master both have private access to their respective heads, with the owners’ being en suite. This layout is perfectly suited to and can be equally enjoyed by both sailing couples and families.
HISTORY
The history of any boat is important, especially as it ages. Many 54’s have histories that include charter work, multiple ownerships, or even a huge refit taken on by a most recent owner. Berkeley East’s original owners can share over a decade of details on how she performs – from how she handles in large Atlantic swells all the way to how she feels in peaceful Mediterranean anchorages. They know which pump has been replaced for an improved model, understand the value of her impeccably clean bilge, and even handpicked the planks for her new teak decks. Berkeley East is not just another beautiful Hylas 54; she is one of the last that has a complete and known history.
